The Kansas City Alias: The Mystery of Room 1046 and Artemus Ogletree
Part 2: Secrets from the Police File
The body was identified. The killer was not.
Welcome back to Ontario Cold Cases. I’m your host, Jay Nicoll, and in this highly anticipated Part 2, we peel back the layers on the infamous 1935 murder of Artemus Ogletree, found tortured and dying in Kansas City’s Room 1046.
In Part 1, you learned about the fake name, the missing clothes, the mysterious note for "Don," the diluted sulfuric acid, and the chilling farewell from "Louise" and her thirteen roses. Now, we go deeper.
With information directly from the police files, revealing a secret network of aliases, suspicious alibis, and leads that were never fully followed:
* The Unanswered Questions: Why did Ogletree claim he was working for a "Bond Co." when his family knew it was a front? Why was he desperate for new clothes when he’d left home with two suits?* The Suspect’s Boast: The letter detailing the "perfect crime"—was it an empty threat, or a genuine confession? And why did the suspect desperately want to know why the FBI hadn't questioned a certain Birmingham boy?* The Missing Thumb: A phone call from a phantom figure named "Godfrey Jordan" claimed Ogletree had lost a thumb in Cairo, Egypt. Did this severe injury exist? The autopsy report finally provides the answer.* A World of Lies: Records reveal Ogletree was also using the alias "Eugene K. Scott," and a man in a letter claimed Ogletree was making his living off of "queers." Was the victim a blackmailer caught by his prey?* The Locked Door: We track the timeline minute-by-minute, scrutinizing witness statements that contradict official reports and identify several uninterviewed persons of interest, including a man who claimed he "couldn't sleep" and a "commercial woman" who frequented the tenth floor the night of the attack.
The Hotel President holds decades of secrets. Now, it’s time to expose the truth hidden in the fine print of the original KCPD investigation.
Listen to Part 2 of The Kansas City Alias now on Ontario Cold Cases and help Jay Nicoll attempt to finally solve the mystery of Room 1046.
Because every case deserves answers—and every victim deserves justice.

The Kansas City Alias: The Mystery of Room 1046 and Artemus Ogletree
The Hotel President, Kansas City, 1935. A "wide-open" city where secrets were deadly.
A young man checks into Room 1046 under the name "Roland T. Owen." He has no luggage, asks for an interior room for maximum secrecy, and spends his time in the suffocating dark.
For two days, hotel staff witness a parade of bizarre activity: hushed phone calls to a man named "Don," a maid finding the door locked from the outside, and arguments in the dead of night involving both male and female voices.
Then comes the brutal discovery.
Found naked and restrained, the man is savagely beaten, stabbed, and left for dead on the blood-soaked floor. With his dying breath, he whispers a single word when asked to name his attacker: "Nobody."
The case fractures immediately. Police find no clothes, no identification, and no murder weapon—only a bizarre collection of clues: a hairpin, a safety pin, a note for "Don," and a full bottle of diluted sulfuric acid.
Two years later, the victim is finally identified as Artemus Ogletree, but the truth only grows darker. The police receive typewritten letters from the killer pretending Artemus is alive. An anonymous caller pays for the funeral, warning that "cheaters get what's coming to them." And a bouquet of thirteen roses arrives, signed: "Love for ever, Louise."
Was this a secret life exposed? A deadly love triangle? Or a blackmail plot gone violently wrong?
Join Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations as Ontario Cold Cases crosses the border to dissect one of America's most chilling, complex, and unsolvable mysteries. The killer left clues, but they lead only to a dark web of aliases, deception, and death.

The Fortune Teller’s Game
When the tea leaves spell murder, who do you trust—fate, or the Fortunatos?
A Mick & Mack Mystery
Toronto’s Little Italy has a queen, and her throne is a lace-covered table in a bustling tea shop. Milly Fortunato is loud, loving, and terrifying when crossed—matriarch, fortune-teller, and underworld player who’s been running numbers longer than Manny “The Hat” Kaufmann’s been tipping his fedora.
But when Milly predicts a man’s death—and he’s found dead before midnight—Detectives Mick McCathie and Mack MacNeely are caught between superstition and sabotage. Another prediction comes true, the body count rises, and suddenly Milly’s family empire looks less like a kingdom and more like a powder keg.
With Manny muscling in, nephews scheming, and Shnooky Levine hiding under tables, Mick & Mack must cut through smoke, shadows, and prophecy to find the real killer. Because someone isn’t just reading fortunes—they’re writing them in blood.
And in the margins of the case, a cryptic note warns:
“Your deaths have already been written.”

⚾ Vanished at Niagara Falls: The Strange Death of Big Ed Delahanty ⚾
He was one of baseball’s first true superstars — a powerhouse slugger whose elegant swing and towering presence made him a legend of the 19th century. But in the summer of 1903, Ed “Big Ed” Delahanty stepped off a train near Niagara Falls… and into one of the most enduring mysteries in sports history.
Days later, his body was found battered beneath Horseshoe Falls, stripped of his prized rings and diamond tie pin. The questions came fast and never left:
* Did he stumble to his death on the dark, treacherous International Railway Bridge?* Did despair and drink drive him to suicide?* Or was foul play — perhaps even murder — the real reason Big Ed never reached New York?
From his rise as one of baseball’s greatest hitters to his tragic final hours, Vanished on the Bridge unravels the tangled threads of Delahanty’s life, death, and legacy. More than a century later, the roar of the falls still drowns out the truth — leaving behind a mystery as haunting as the man himself.
Because every case deserves answers—and every victim deserves justice.

The Tragic Case of Susan Siegel and a Potential Serial Killer
A City Stalked by Shadows. A Killer Still at Large.
In the gritty underbelly of 1980s Toronto, a predator hunted the vulnerable. Susan Siegel, a 20-year-old sex trade worker, vanished into the night of December 16, 1984, only to be found strangled and abandoned by desolate railroad tracks. Her murder, chillingly similar to four others, remains unsolved—haunting clues pointing to a young man in a small truck, a $50,000 reward, and no answers. Was Susan’s death the work of a lone killer, or part of a sinister pattern that claimed multiple lives?
Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast rips open the files on Susan’s case and four other strangulation murders, uncovering eerie connections. Two suspects emerge: Gregory George Ashford, a convicted killer whose chilling diary confesses to murders across Canada, and Daniel Harvey Atkinson, a landscaper with a violent history. With insights from FBI serial killer expert John Douglas, the podcast reveals a terrifying truth: these weekend slayings point to a predator—or predators—lurking in Toronto’s shadows.

A City Stalked by Shadows. A Killer Still at Large.
In the neon-lit streets of 1980s Toronto, a predator hunted the vulnerable, leaving a trail of unsolved murders that haunt the city to this day. Among them: 17-year-old Benita Tarantino, a troubled teen who vanished one night in 1985, just days after her engagement.
