Shadows Over Toronto
Hello, I’m Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations and this is an Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast fictional episode of Whodunnit Wednesday’s.
Go back to the Golden Era of detective fiction and enjoy stories in the tradition of the greats of writing. From Agatha Christie to Raymond Chandler to John Creasey, these are short stories I hope you enjoy.
Shadows Over Toronto
John Blake’s phone buzzed with a new email—an anonymous tip about the unsolved “Gardener Murders,” a series of cold cases from the late 90s where victims were found buried in shallow graves in various community gardens around the city, each with a rare flower planted atop them. The cases had gone cold, and the killer was never found.
Looking closely at the photo he realized it was a new site, unconnected to the old patterns but eerily similar in execution.
The realization sent a chill down his spine. Was the killer back, or was it a copycat inspired by the original crimes? Either way, John knew he was about to descend into a deep, dark world once again.

Serial killer 'Jack the Stripper' bore chilling similarities with his Victorian namesake
In one of the most disturbing serial killer cases to occur in London, a man murdered eight sex workers over a five-year period from 1959 to 1965 and dumped their bodies across West London.
The local press began calling the uncaught killer “Jack the Stripper,” an ode to Jack the Ripper, who had terrorized London sex workers about 75 years prior.
This Thursday, November 28th, in Ontario Cold Cases - Part 1 of Jack the Stripper, we will look into the crimes and victims. Join us as we piece together the fragmented history of one of London, England’s most infamous unsolved crimes.

Vanished – The Cameron March Mystery
Boy, 4, Disappears After Visiting Friend
“He was just a cheerful little boy, playing outside on a sunny afternoon. And then—he was gone.”
On May 7, 1975, four-year-old Cameron March disappeared from his quiet village in Lowville, Ontario near Burlington. What began as a normal day turned into a nightmare that would haunt the small community forever. Hundreds of searchers scoured the countryside, drained ponds, and combed forests, but Cameron was nowhere to be found.
“There were cars seen near the home—one white and green, another red—and a man with a beard walking along the road that day. But who were they? And what did they want?”
Decades later, the questions still echo. How could a little boy vanish without a trace? Who was the mysterious man seen pacing the road? Could the cars spotted nearby hold the key to the truth?
Join us as we unravel the chilling details, follow the twists and turns of a decades-old investigation, and uncover the haunting connections to other disappearances in the region.
Sometimes, the smallest clues hide the biggest secrets.

The murder of Betty Shanks has haunted Brisbane for decades. After 72 years, it still remains unsolved
Welcome to Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast, the podcast where we delve into some of the world’s most perplexing mysteries, unsolved crimes, and haunting cold cases.
The murder of Betty Shanks has cast a haunting shadow over Brisbane for more than seven decades. Even after 72 years, her tragic death remains an unsolved mystery, chilling those who hear her story.
It was a mild spring evening on September 19, 1952, when two piercing screams shattered the quiet of Brisbane’s inner-north suburb of Grange. An off-duty police officer, Constable Alex Stewart, along with other residents, heard the cries but dismissed them as the antics of teenagers. No one ventured into the dark to investigate.
By sunrise, those screams would become the prelude to one of Queensland's most infamous unsolved murders. While on his morning rounds, Constable Stewart stumbled upon a horrifying scene just metres from his own home: the battered body of 22-year-old Betty Shanks lay in a neighbour’s garden, her bloodstained tram ticket still clutched in her hand.

Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast fictional episode of Whodunnit Wednesday’s.
Go back to the Golden Era of detective fiction and enjoy stories in the tradition of the greats of writing. From Agatha Christie to Raymond Chandler to John Creasey, these are short stories I hope you enjoy.
The night was still and oppressive, with a heavy mist curling around the ancient stone walls of Grange Court, a crumbling Elizabethan mansion nestled deep in the Suffolk countryside. Once a symbol of grandeur, the house now stood as a weary testament to time's inevitable march, its former glory marred by neglect.
The house's current occupants were the Forsyte family, who had inherited the estate along with its accompanying burdens. Colonel Richard Forsyte, recently retired from the army, had returned to Grange Court with his much younger second wife, Lydia. Their arrival had breathed a semblance of life back into the old house, though it was a fragile illusion, like the delicate ivy clinging to the mansion's exterior.
But as the night wore on, the storm grew fiercer, the wind howling like a wounded animal. And in the depths of Grange Court, beneath the layers of time and memory, something stirred.
Someone had been pressing the Colonel to reveal a secret—one that, Detective Inspector Robert Dalgliesh suspected, was at the heart of his murder. But what truth was so dangerous that it had cost Richard Forsyte his life?

London Shadows: The Case of The Stockwell Strangler – Part 2 Welcome to Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast where we dig deep into the stories of some of the most elusive and dangerous criminals in modern history. I’m Jay Nicoll of Nicoll Investigations, and in today’s episode, we’re looking into one of the UK’s most disturbing serial killers.
Stockwell, a district in inner South London within the borough of Lambeth, was once known as one of London's poorer areas. However, in recent years, its proximity to Central London and excellent transport links have transformed it into a rising neighborhood.
In the summer of 1986, a little-known and often overlooked killer haunted South London, targeting one of society’s most vulnerable groups: the elderly. Over a chilling 17-week spree, this killer claimed the lives of at least seven pensioners in horrifyingly brutal ways.
Join us as we explore how justice was finally served and the lasting impact of these horrific crimes on the community.

The Disappearance of Jake Just
Hello, I’m Jay Nicoll from Nicoll Investigations and I’m here to tell you about the next episode of Ontario Cold Cases - Canada’s True Crime Podcast, available now!
October 30 marked 26 years since the mysterious disappearance of Jake Just, a young man from Midland who vanished after taking a late-night shortcut through the Sunnyside Woods.
Jake, who would be 44 years old today, remains a painful absence for his loved ones. Despite the passage of time, the ache of his loss has not diminished.
The investigation initially focused on the last place Jake was seen — the frequently traveled shortcut through the wooded area in Midland. On that night, Jake had been out with friends, drinking and joking around, even smashing bottles over each other's heads in playful antics. When it came time to head home, he and a friend started walking together, but Jake chose to take the dimly lit trail through the woods alone.
He was never seen again.
Hampered by a possible head injury and under the influence of alcohol, did he lose his way and stumble into a boggy swamp, where he was swallowed up by so-called quicksand or did something more nefarious happen?
Join us in the latest episode of Ontario Cold Cases – Canada’s True Crime Podcast, coming this Sunday, November 17th, as we try to unravel and answer these questions to murders that have never been solved, and don’t forget to subscribe with new episodes daily wherever you listen to your favourite podcasts.
